Lower Cholesterol Levels With Guggul
The Indain herb Guggul, is a standardized extract from the mukul myrrh (Commiphora mukul) tree, which is native to India.
Mike Flowers of www.you-and-your-cholesterol.com says that "research has shown that by increasing the breakdown of LDL cholesterol in the liver, it can lower LDL cholesterol levels by 25-35%. It can also lower total cholesterol by 14-27%, triglycerides by 22-30%, and increase HDL cholesterol by approximately 20%.
He said that another study found that the steroid guggulsterone, the active agent in the extract, blocks the activity of the farnesoid X receptor (FXR) on cells.
FXR helps regulate cholesterol by affecting bile acids, which are produced from cholesterol and released by the liver. Earlier this year, a study by researchers in the United States found that the herb can also help people with osteoporosis.
They suggested it can reduce pain, stiffness, and help people with the condition to walk more easily.
The resin or sap of the tree has been used in India and other parts of the east for centuries.
Uses include treating rheumatoid arthritis, cardiovasvascular disease, obesity and inflammation.
India officially approved the plant as a lipid lowering drug in the 1980's.
Studies indicate that the product should not be taken with blood thinners without the consent of a medical professional. "
Mr. Flowers also stated that the product is now widely available for use in the States.
He pointed out that people should always consult their medical professional before taking herbs or supplements especially if they have health related issues.
